The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stepped in to clear
the air concerning the controversy surrounding the result of the 2019
presidential election.
Recall that a fresh controversy had emerged on the result of the election
after the candidate of the main opposition party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and his
camp came out with fresh results where it claimed to have won the election.
According to Information Nigeria, it accused PDP’s presidential candidate in
the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, of manufacturing results of the last
presidential election to prove his case at the Presidential Election Petitions
Tribunal (PEPT), Information Nigeria reports.
INEC responded to Atiku’s petition at PEPT in Abuja. The commission distance
itself from an electronic sheet that allegedly contained the genuine results of
the presidential election.
Mr Abubakar’s legal team submitted the sheet at the tribunal last month,
stating that it was obtained from an internal compilation of results on INEC’s
Internet server. Atiku’s lawyers claimed that Atiku Abubakar won by more than
six million votes, but his victory was allegedly suppressed by the commission in
favour of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari.

Atiku’s purported victory based on the results submitted to the tribunal by
his legal team irked the supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress
after the claim became public.
Mr Buhari’s campaign also wrote to the police and the State Security Service
to launch a criminal investigation against Atiku. It accused him of illegally
accessing INEC’s files.
Recall that the ruling party has opened a fresh case against the candidacy of
Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has told the presidential election
tribunal that Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP), is not fit to rule Nigeria.

While responding to the petition by Atiku and his party, PDP which they filed
before the presidential election petition to challenge the victory of President
Muhammadu Buhari in the February 23rd election.

According to the ruling party, Atiku was born on November 25, 1946 in Jada,
Adamawa state, which was then in Northern Cameroon; hence, Cameroonian not
Nigerian.
The APC counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, this therefore disqualifies the former vice
president, from contesting election. Referencing section 131(a) of the 1999
constitution which states that has to be a Nigerian citizen, to enable him
eligible to by birth to contest for the highest office in the land.
The APC counsel asked the tribunal to void all votes scores by Atiku in the
just concluded presidential election — And also dismiss Atiku/PDP petition.

The matter is still in court. Nigerians are really waiting to see how this
whole thing will turn out at last. The decision of the court is expected to
settle the issue..
